UNIT OVERVIEW
The Sports & Recreation Unit (SRU) is a part of the Client-Based Services Division of the Mohawk Council of Kahnawake.
The SRU is the body responsible for overseeing minor sports and youth targeted recreation in the community through the Minor Sports Global Disbursement Policy.
This consists of the collection and verification of minor sports and recreation registration fees in addition to the administration of an annual $200,000 contribution to the minor sports and recreation organizations who apply for funding each year.
Sports and Recreation regularly undertakes special projects and initiatives to fundraise, increase capacity and develop our athletes. Regular high caliber athletic projects include hosting the National Aboriginal Hockey Championships and participating in the North American Indigenous Games.
The SRU is also responsible for maintenance and development of all recreational fields, parks, playing surfaces and facilities in the community.
Sports and Recreation oversees the maintenance of the following community-owned recreation structures:
1 Kahnawà:ke Sports Complex
1 Skateboard Park
11 Park Playgrounds
4 Seasonal Ice Rinks
1 Lacrosse Rink/Seasonal Ice Rink
3 Baseball Diamonds
MISSION STATEMENT
The Mission of the SRU is to strengthen, support and promote sports and recreation to improve the health and well-being of Kahnawakehron:non and encourage them to develop their skills, special talents and achieve their full potential.
